Frequently asked questions
Standard Roman numerals only run up to 3999 using the basic letters, since there is no single symbol for larger values. Numbers above that need overlines or other notation that is rarely used today.
When a smaller symbol sits before a larger one, it is subtracted — so IV is four and IX is nine. Placing it after means addition, as in VI for six.
